Since 1981 Philip has drawn and painted more than 10,000 self-portraits. “What I paint is our ability as human beings to contemplate existence,” he says. Jameszoo: “First and foremost I’m a fan of Philip. His paintings are endlessly fascinating, beautiful and fun. I love the way he found himself able to express so wildly while staying within the confinement of the self-portrait. When seeing multiple of his works being displayed together I find it hard to digest all is coming from the hand of one single artist. Within Philip’s work the possibilities are endless! I’m thankful for him working with me. Philip already has made 3 fantastic album covers and lent his skill for multiple side projects. He has become a close collaborator and an even closer friend. When Philip asked me to make a music-piece for a book about his work ‘Het doel van het bestaan is het maken van een zelfportret’ (‘The goal of existence is making a self-portrait’) I immediately said yes. It resulted in the piece ‘Philip’. I loved the result and asked him if he would be ok with me putting a version of it on my new album “Blind”. I decided I wanted to try and make a video honouring Philips work accompanying the music and proposed an idea to him that led to the video above. Showing thousands of his paintings in such a fast succession creates a mind-boggling overview on how far his creative mind reaches. The portraits range all the way from the early 1980s up to now. Even after seeing thousands of his portraits I still can’t imagine what he will paint next.
